Catalog No. R04-0001-AP (academic); R04-0001-CI (commercial)
Description Neuroscreen-1 is a neuronal-like cell line optimized for screening. It is a subclone of PC12, a widely used cell line derived from rat pheochromocytoma cells that serves as a standard model system for neurons. Neuroscreen-1 cells display several substantial advantages over PC12 cells, including 50-80% faster growth, no tendency toward cell aggregation, high and accelerated responsiveness to NGF (measurable neurites within 2 days), and excellent performance in screening assays. A detailed comparison of Neuroscreen-1 cells to the parental PC-12 cells was undertaken to better understand the differences between these two cell lines. First, cells were grown under normal and growth-stimulating conditions and their morphology was observed. Figure 1 reveals that the Neuroscreen-1 cell line (panels C&D) is less prone to clumping, making analysis of neurites easier. Additional experiments to compare growth rates, preferred substrate, and robustness (Table 1) showed that Neuroscreen-1 cells have many properties that make them more favorable for screening. Features - Robust growth characteristics with 50- 80% decrease in doubling time relative to PC12 cells
- Grow as adherent cultures with no tendency toward cell aggregation
- Neurite Outgrowth quantifiable in as little as 2 days
- High and accelerated responsiveness to NGF
- Excellent performance in screening assays
- Validated for use with Thermo Scientific Cellomics®, Inc. Neurite Outgrowth HitKit™ HCS Reagent Kit and ArrayScan® HCS Reader for automated neurite outgrowth screening
